The Thomas Philip-Novice Arbitration Mooting Competition

The 4th Novice Arbitration Mooting Competition (NAMCO) was held on 17th - 19th April 2015 at the Faculty of Law, MARA University of Technology (UiTM), sponsored by Thomas Philip for the second year running.

YA Dr. Prasad Sandosham Abraham, Court of Appeal Judge, was the guest of honour at this year’s opening ceremony which was also attended by the partners and associates from Thomas Philip. Mr. Balan Nair gave a talk on the practices of arbitration in Malaysia. A question-and-answer session was also held with YA Dr. Prasad at the opening ceremony.

There was a field of 14 teams in total- from 8 Malaysian universities including 1 private university, participating in this year’s NAMCO. The moot question this year is on intellectual property law. Overall, the teams did incredibly well in showing advocacy and research skills in Malaysia’s only novice arbitration moot competition.

This year’s event was judged by a total of 30 individuals comprising of practising lawyers, representatives from the Attorney General’s Chambers and Intellectual Property law lecturers. Dr Chris Hemingway, a world renowned Patent Attorney and also an authority on intellectual property law, was the head judge for the Final Round.

The NAMCO 2015 champion was team 102 from UiTM, winning the title for the first time after beating Universiti Malaya, the defending three-time NAMCO champion.
